Crafty Monday: Jewel

I, happily, finished my vest yesterday evening. Tried it on and walked out to the living room to show my husband and ask what he thought of it. He hesitated for a minute. “you want my honest opinion?” he asked. “Of Course,” I replied. “It evokes the color of vomit.” My heart kind of sank. Because I couldn’t stop thinking about vomit when I saw it. sigh. I do appreciate the feedback, though. As rough as it is. I’d hate to be walking around town in a vest that looks like vomit, you know?

The truth is, I kind of felt the same way, even before he gave me his opinion. I didn’t think of vomit, mind you, but I didn’t feel right about it. It just looks….weird. And looking at it again, The colors are, indeed, the colors of stomach bile. They truly are.

Yarn for a projectAnd this, my friends, is exactly why I hate variegated yarn. It sits on the shelf in the yarn store all pretty and shiny. The pretty colors call their siren song and suck the unsuspecting knitter in. Then the yarn is knitted up and, guess what? It looks like vomit. The colors all run together and don’t look right when they pool. The next time I am even tempted by these skeins I will look at this picture and be reminded of the awful way it knits up. At least the skeins that are so totally varied in color like this.

So what to do? I love the design of the vest and I think it fits me well. So I think I will try overdying it. I’m thinking a pretty chocolate brown or a fallish green. I’ve never over dyed anything so this will be an adventure. I will definately post about it when I do it.

Overdying is always an adventure. I’ve done it a time or two…but I don’t think I’ve tried it with variegated. I’ll be watching anxiously!
